Procedure
A solution of 8 g of the compound obtained in Step A, 50 ml of 1M sodium hydroxide solution, 50 ml of water and 100 ml of ethanol is stirred for 6 hours at 50° C. The ethanol is then removed by distillation under a partial vacuum. The residual solution is rendered acidic by the addition of 1M hydrochloric acid and extracted with dichloromethane. The combined organic phases are dried with Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness to yield a colourless oil (quantitative yield).
