A solution of 6.96 g of 2-hydroxy-4-[6-[2,3-dimethoxy-4-(1-methylethyl)phenyl]hexyloxy]-3-propylbenzoic acid phenylmethyl ester in 150 mL of ethyl acetate and 1.4 g of 10% palladium on carbon was stirred in a hydrogen atmosphere for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through a Celite pad and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to 5.45 g, mp 106°-108°, of 2-hydroxy-4-[6-[2,3-dimethoxy-4-(1-methylethyl)phenyl]hexyloxy]-3-propylbenzoic acid.
