Procedure

1.155 g of the 1-[3,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)acryloyl]piperazine [prepared as described in step (a) above] were dissolved in 12 ml of benzene, and the resulting solution was heated under reflux for 2 hours with 1.326 g of Lawesson's Reagent. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, after which it was poured into water and extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography through 30 g of silica gel eluted with a 19:1 by volume mixture of methylene chloride and methanol, to give 1.177 g of 1-[3,3-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)thioacryloyl]piperazine as a powder.
