This product (17) was dissolved in H2SO4 and cooled in an ice/H2O bath. KNO3 was added and the ice bath removed. The solution was stirred an additional 2 hours and then heated at 50° C. for 40 hours, yielding 7,8-dinitro-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-4(5H)-one (18).
