To a solution of 47.37 grams (0.599 mol) of pyridine in 300 milliters of acetonitrile over a period of approximately 5 minutes there was added 100.0 grams (0.599 mol) of ethyl bromoacetate. The mixture was then stirred for approximately 19.3 hours. Solid crystallized and was collected, washed with ether and dried. The yield of product was 113.3 grams (76.86% of theory); mp=133°-134° C.
