Procedure

A solution of compound B5 (0.42 g) and potassium hydroxide (0.1 g) in methanol (5 ml) was left to stand for 1 hour. The solvent was removed by evaporation and the residue partitioned between ethyl acetate (20 ml) and water (20 ml). The organic phase was separated, washed with saturated sodium chloride solution (20 ml) and dried (MgSO4) The solvent was removed by evaporation and ether (10 ml) was added to the residue. Insoluble material was removed by filtration and the filtrate was evaporated to give 2-ethyl 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4-(2'-(2-triphenylmethyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl)-4-yl)methoxy]-1,5-naphthyridine (A5) (0.12 g), as a foam; NMR (d6 -DMSO): 1.15(t,3H), 1.8-1.9(m,2H), 2.5(q,2H), 2.7(t,2H), 3.05-3.15(m,2H), 5.05(s,2H), 6.65(s,1H), 6.8-6.9(m,6H), 7.1(d,2H), 7.2-7.7(complex m,14H), 7.9(dd,1H).
