Procedure

The product of Stage c), (0.53 g, 1.18 mmoles) was dissolved in methanol (17ml) containing sodium methoxide (from 0.027g, 1.18mmoles of sodium metal) and the solution left standing at ambient temperature for 7 hours. The mixture was then neutralised with Dowex 50 (H+) resin, filtered and evaporated to dryness. The final residue was triturated with ether (2×7 ml) and recrystallised from ethanol to give the title compound.
