To a mixed solution of (3R,4R)-pyrrolidine-3,4-diol monohydrochloride (2.1 g) in 1-propanol (60 mL)/water (2.0 mL) was added Na2CO3 (4.0 g). The mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 1 hr. To the mixture was added 2-(2-{3-[4-(4-ethylbenzyloxy)-3-methoxyphenyl]azetidine-1-carbonyl}pyridin-4-yloxy)ethyl methanesulfonate (6.7 g) prepared in (1). The reaction mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 10 hr. Water was added to the reaction mixture and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and brine, and then dried over Na2SO4. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (Developing solvent: chloroform/methanol=40/1 to 5/1) to give the title compound (4.7 g, 70%).
