A mixture of 3,3-dimethyl-1,5-dioxa-spiro[5.5]undecan-9-one (10.0 g), ethyl cyanoacetate (5.9 mL), piperidine (0.5 mL), acetic acid (0.3 mL), and ethanol (100 mL) is stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture is then cooled to −5° C. and the precipitate formed is separated by filtration, washed with ice-cold ethanol, and dried to give the title compound as a colorless solid. Yield: 13.7 g (93% of theory); Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=294 [M+H]+.
