A mixture of 4 M aqueous NaOH solution (6 mL), N-(8-{2-[(S)-1-(4-chloro-phenyl)-ethylamino]-ethyl}-1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]dec-8-yl)-2,2,2-trifluoro-acetamide (2.10 g), and methanol (10 mL) is stirred at 50° C. for 24 h. After cooling to room temperature, most of the methanol is evaporated and the residue is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extract is washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to give the title compound. Yield: 98% of theory; LC (method 8): tR=0.78 min; Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=339/341 (Cl) [M+H]+.
