Reaction Steps
To stirred solution of 2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (100 g, 552 mmol) in conc. H2SO4 (400 mL), 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethyl-2,4-imidazolidinedione (88 g, 308 mmol) was added in a portion wise manner at room temperature and the reaction mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 5 h. The reaction mixture was poured onto ice cold water, the precipitated solid was filtered off, washed with water and dried under vacuum to afford the desired compound as a solid (140 g, 98%). The isolated compound was taken directly into the next step. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6, 400 MHz) δ 8.31 (s, 1H), 8.17 (s, 1H), 2.43 (s, 314).
