Aqueous potassium hydroxide (1 mL of 0.1 N, 0.1 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-(bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-methyl)-benzoic acid [32 mg, 0.1 mmol, Adamczyk, M. and Grote, J. Organic Preparations and Procedures International, 2001, 33(1), 95] in 5 mL of ethanol and the mixture was stirred for additional 2 h at room temperature. The mixture was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to give 36 mg (100% yield) of the desired compound as a white solid, mp>300° C. 1H NMR (D2O, 300 MHz): δ6.41 [s, 1H, —CH], 6.66 [d, 4H, J=8.8 Hz, Ar—H], 6.80 [d, 4H, J=8.8 Hz, Ar—H], 7.03 [d, 1H, J=7.7 Hz, Ar—H], 7.35 [t, 1H, J=7.7 Hz, Ar—H], 7.44 [t, 1H, J=7.7 Hz, Ar—H], 7.74 [dd, 1H, =7.7 Hz, J2=2.2 Hz, Ar—H].
