A solution of tert-butyl-4-(4-carbamoyl-1-methyl-3-oxo-1,3-dihydro-2H-isoindol-2-yl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (2.8 g, 7.5 mmol) in 4M hydrochloric acid in dioxane (18 mL, 75 mmol) was stirred at 50° C. for 2 hours until HPLC analysis revealed the disappearance of the starting material. The solvent was removed under reduce pressure and the product was dissolved in diethyl ether and decanted to obtain the title compound (2 g 95%) as its hydrochloride.
