(E)-methyl 2-(2-(bromomethyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate (1.0 g, 3.5 mmol) was reacted with 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde (0.6 g, 4.2 mmol) at room temperature for 3 hours in 20 mL of acetonitrile (CH3CN) in the presence of cesium carbonate (1.7 g, 5.2 mmol) with stirring. After concentration in a vacuum to remove the reaction solvent, the residue was stirred in water (20 mL) and the aqueous layer was extracted twice with 20 mL of dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in a vacuum. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography to afford (E)-methyl 2-(2-((4-formyl-2,5-dimethylphenoxy)methyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate as a white solid (0.88 g, yield 71%).
