Procedure
A solution of 13-oxo-7,8,9,10,11,13-hexahydro-6H-azocino[2,1-b]quinazoline-3-carboxylic acid (100 mg, 0.37 mmol), acetaldehyde (5 mL) and CH3COONa (1 g) in acetic acid (10 mL) was stirred at 110° C. for 24 hours. After it was cooled to room temperature, the mixture was adjusted to pH around 8 with Na2CO3 and extracted with a mixture of dichloromethane/methanol (10/1) (3×30 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine and dried over Na2SO4. After filtration and concentration, the crude product obtained was used for the next step without further purification.
