Procedure

Proceeding as in Reference 9, but substituting 3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenylacetonitrile (1 g, 6.2 mmol) and N-bromosuccinimide (1.7 g, 9.3 mmol), gave 3-bromo-5-formyl-4-hydroxyphenylacetonitrile (1.2 g).
