To a stirred solution of (S)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1′-{[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxy]methyl}-6,8-dihydrospiro[cyclopenta[g]quinoline-7,3′-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin]-2′(1′H)-one from Step A (1.44 g, 3.22 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (10 mL) was added thionyl chloride (7.66 g, 64.3 mmol) and the resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 30 min, then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was concentrated in vacuo from toluene (2×10 mL) to give the title compound in sufficient purity for use in the next step. MS: m/z=466 (M+1).
