Ethyl 2-(3-hydroxyphenyl)propanoate (2.51 g, 12.9 mmol) in acetic acid (20 mL) was added nitric acid (60-62%, 1.45 g, 13.8 mmol) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for 15 minutes at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried with MgSO4 and filtered. EtOAc was removed by evaporation. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with n-Hexane/EtOAc=6/1.
