Procedure
To a solution of methyl 2-[2-methyl-4-(phenylthio)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro[1]benzothieno[2,3-b]pyridin-3-yl]-2-tert-butoxyacetate (0.032 g; 0.070 mmol) in methanol (1 mL) was added a solution of sodium hydroxide 10 N (0.100 mL; 1 mmol) and the mixture was heated at 65° C. for 18 h. After cooling, the organic volatiles were removed under reduced pressure and the aqueous phase was then acidified with a solution of hydrochloric acid 2N until a precipitate was formed. The solid was filtered, washed with water and dried under reduced pressure to afford 0.017 g (50%) of the title compound as a white solid.
