According to the process described in paragraph (b) of Example 1, from ethyl (S)-(-)-2-(3-hydroxy-1-pyrrolidinyl)acetate there is obtained (S)-(-)-2-(3-hydroxy-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidinyl)acetamide which has a melting point of 197°-198°; [α]D20 =-82°, [α]54620 =-99°, [α]35620 =-313° (dimethylformamide c=1.00).
