Procedure
To 82.6 g of sodium borohydride in 950 ml. of methanol at -5° to 0° C. was slowly added in portions 63 g. of methyl 1-methyl-5-oxo-2-phenylpyrrolidin-3-carboxylate. After the addition, the reaction mixture was then allowed to come to ambient temperature over 2 hours. Concentration in vacuo gave a semisolid which was suspended in water at 50° C. and stirred for 30 minutes. The solid was then dissolved in 3:1 chloroform-ether, dried (Na2SO4) filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to yield 40 g. of an oil.
