Procedure
8.7 ml of a 35% formaldehyde solution are added dropwise to a solution of 9 g of 9-fluoro-6-p-fluorophenyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydro-azepino[4,5-b]indole in 6.9 g of formic acid. The mixture is heated for 10 minutes to 70°, cooled, poured onto water, made alkaline with concentrated ammonia and extracted with ether. The ether extracts are dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated to give the title compound in hydrochloride form, m.p. 215° (decomp.; from ether/acetone).
