5-Cyano-3-(3-pyridyl)-1-(4′-nitrophenyl)pyrazole (4.3 g, 15 mmol) was added to stirred slurry of SnCl2H2O (20 g, 90 mmol) in HCl/HOAc (35 mL/35 mL). A thick suspension formed and was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was carefully basified with 50% NaOH to pH 13. The resulting solids were filtered, washed with water and dried to give the title compound (3.9 g, 99%).
