7.5 g (22.4 mmol) of 6-(4-acetylamino-2,6-dichlorophenoxy)hexanoic acid in 140 ml of 1 m potassium hydroxide solution in methanol/water (3:1) were boiled under reflux overnight. The methanol was removed in a rotary evaporator, and the residue was diluted with about 30 ml of water and acidified to pH 5 with glacial acetic acid. The mixture was stirred in an ice bath for 30 minutes and then filtered with suction. The crude product was subjected to column chromatography using n-heptane/ethyl acetate=1/1 and produced 4.3 g (14.7 mmol, 66%) of the required product.
