Procedure
[4-(tert-Butoxycarbonylamino-methyl)-3-fluoro-phenoxy]-acetic acid methyl ester (0.94 g, 3.0 mmol) was dissolved in formic acid (13 mL) and heated to 60° C. When the reaction was complete, the formic acid was removed under reduced pressure, and co-evaporated with chloroform and ethanol (1:1) to remove any excess formic acid. The resulting formate salt was taken up in ethyl acetate and shaken with saturated sodium bicarbonate. The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4) concentrated in vacuo to provide 0.56 g of product which was used directly in the next step.
