Reaction Steps
0.75 g (7.49 mmol) of calcium carbonate and then 1.0 g (5.66 mmol) of benzenesulphonyl chloride are added to a solution, maintained under a nitrogen atmosphere, of 0.80 g (3.77 mmol) of 3,5-dimethyl-4-[(nitromethyl)thio]aniline in 30 ml of anhydrous tetrahydrofuran. After stirring for 3 days at room temperature, the reaction medium is poured into water and extracted with methylene chloride. The combined organic extracts are washed with water, dried over sodium Sulphate and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue obtained is purified by chromatography on a column of silica (eluent: methylene chloride) to give 0.9 g (68%) of N-[3,5-dimethyl-4-[(nitromethyl)thio]phenyl]benzenesulphonamide.
