Procedure
Thionyl chloride (1.64 ml) was added dropwise to a suspension of 4-bromo-2-chlorobenzoic acid (6.92 g) in methanol, and heated to 60° C. for 2 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo, the residue redissolved in ethyl acetate, and washed sequentially with 0.5 N sodium hydroxide (2×), water, and brine. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent removed in vacuo to afford the title compound (7.8 g). 1H NMR (300 MHz), (DMSO-d6) δ: 3.87 (s,3H), 7.68-7.9 (m, 3H).
