Procedure

To a stirred solution of N-BOC-L-phenylalanine (20 g, 75.4 mmol) in methylene chloride (200 mL) is added aniline (7.0 mL, 75.4 mmol), dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (15.5 g, 75.4 mmol), and 1-hydroxy-7-azabenzotriazole (10.3 g, 75.4 mmol). The mixture is stirred at room temperature overnight. The solid is filtered away and the filtrate is washed with 5% citric acid (50 mL), a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate (50 mL), and brine (50 mL). The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield a light brown solid. The solid is recrystallized from ethyl acetate to afford N-BOC-L-phenylalanine-N-phenylamide as a white solid (11 g).
