Procedure

A mixture of 2-(4'-acetamidophenyl)benzothiazole (0.4 g, 1.49 mmol) and Lawesson's reagent (0.37 g, 0.9 mmol) in hexamethyl-phosphoamide (HMPA) (10 ml) was stirred at 100° C. for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into water. The precipitate formed was filtered off, washed with water and dried. The crude product was purified by chromatography on silica gel, eluting with ethyl acetate-hexane (5:6)to give pale yellow crystals (0.26 g, 61%), m.p. 221.6-222.8° C.
