Procedure
3.0 ml (6.0 mmol) of a 2 N aqueous aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were added to a solution of 1.11 g (2.34 mmol) of N-(2-t-butyl-5-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-3-(2-methoxy-4-methylphenyl)octanamide [prepared as described in step (ii) above] in 30 ml of methanol, and the resulting mixture was heated under reflux for 1 hour, after which the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was acidified with 1 N aqueous hydrochloric acid, and the aqueous mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, after which it was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, giving 1.02 g (a quantitative yield) of the title compound as crystals, melting at 163.5-165° C.
