Procedure

A solution of 3-(2-acetylamino-4-diacetylamino-1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-5-pyrimidinyl)propionaldehyde diethyl acetal (1.00 g, 2.6 mmol) in distilled water (30 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. This solution was extracted with ethyl ether (3×50 ml), and chloroform (5×50 ml). The chloroform extracts were combined, washed with water (25 ml), brine (25 ml), dried (MgSO4) and spin evaporated in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from chloroform/cyclohexane to yield 0.200 g (25% of theory) of analytically pure 3-(2-acetylamino-4-diacetylamino-1,6-dihydro-6-oxo-5-pyrimidinyl)propionaldehyde quarter hydrate, mp 164°-168° C.
