Procedure
A mixture of 4.70 g of 8-methoxy-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydrobenzo[f]-quinoline in 15 ml of pyridine and 11 ml of acetic anhydride is left to stand at room temperature for 20 hours and evaporated. The residue remaining behind is taken up twice in 50 ml of dry toluene each time and the solutions obtained are evaporated to dryness. The residue is chromatographed on 50 g of silica gel with methylene chloride and gives 4-acetyl-8-methoxy-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydrobenzo[f]quinoline with a melting point of 119°-120° after recrystallization from ispropyl ether.
