Procedure

A solution of aldehyde 102 (230 mg) in diethyl ether (30 mL) is placed in a separatory funnel and treated with a solution of methyl lithium (1.4 M in THF, 1.5 mL). After 10 min, the solution is washed with ammonium chloride solution (1 M, 20 mL), dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated. The resulting dark oil is purified by preparative TLC (10% MeOH/CHCl3) to provide compound 107 as a colorless oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.56 (d, J=2 Hz, 2H), 7.4 (m, 3H), 7.01 (s, 1H), 4.86 (q, J=7 Hz, 1H), 4.18 (m, 1H), 4.0 (m, 1H), 1.63 (d, J=6.6 Hz, 3H), 1.63 (m, 2H), 1.23 (m, 2H), 0.81 (t, J=7 Hz, 3H).
