BCl3 (1.0 mL, 1M, 1.0 mmol) was added to a solution of 5-iso-butyl-N-tert-butyl-3-(4-tetrazol-1-ylmethylphenyl)thiophene-2-sulfonamide (177.0 mg, 0.408 mmol, see step (b) above) in CH2Cl2 (10 mL) under N2 (g), and the reaction mixture was stirred for 0.5 h. Water (50 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The crude product was used directly in the next step used without further purification.
