To a solution of 3-(4-imidazol-1-ylmethylphenyl)-5-iso-butyl-N-tert-butylthiophene-2-sulfonamide (0.097 mmol, 42.0 mg, see step (b) above) in CH2Cl2 (10 mL) was added BCl3 (0.5 mL, 1M, 0.5 mmol) under N2 (g). The mixture was stirred for 0.5 h. Water (50 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL). The combined organic phases were washed with brine and dried over MgSO4 and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The crude product was used directly in the next step without further purification.
