A mixture of 5.0 g of 2,4-dichlorophenyl 4'-methyl-4-biphenylyl ketone, 2.7 g of N-bromosuccinimide and 20 mg of azaisobutyronitrile in 70 mL of carbon tetrachloride was heated to boiling under reflux for 4 hours. The precipitated material was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from toluene/cyclohexane. There were obtained 5.5 g (89%) of 2,4-dichlorophenyl 4'-bromomethyl-4-biphenylyl ketone as a colorless solid with a m.p. of 92° C.
