Procedure
A mixture of 2-(3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2,6,10,14-hexadecatetraen-1-ylthio)ethylamine (14.0 g, 40.0 mmol, prepared as described in Example 5) and 1,1-bis(methylthio)-2-nitroethylene (6.60 g, 40.0 mmol) in 100 ml of acetonitrile was heated at reflux temperature for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated in vacuo to dryness and the remaining residue was chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with CHCl3 /MeOH (200:1) to afford 14.7 g (78.6%) of the desired compound, as a pale yellow oil.
