Lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate 2.00 g was dissolved in 7.3 g of water to provide an aqueous solution of lanthanum nitrate. Fifteen (15.0) g of γ-alumina (NEOBEAD GB-45® manufactured by Mizusawa Chemical Industries, Co.) was impregnated with the solution prepared as described above and dried in air at 120° C., followed by a sequential calcination in air at 500° C. for 5 hours and in nitrogen at 500° C. for 5 hours. Thus lanthanum oxide supported on γ-alumina was obtained, which was labelled Catalyst (5). This support-type catalyst contained 5 wt % thereof of lanthanum oxide and had a specific surface area of 194 m2 /g.
