9.0 g of 4-methyl-5-hydroxymethylimidazole hydrochloride and 10.2 g of 2-aminoethanethiolsulfuric acid are heated at reflux for 80 minutes in 50 ml of acetic acid, and the reaction mixture is concentrated, passed through 250 ml of a strongly basic anion exchange resin (trade name: Amberlite IRA-410[OH- ]) and eluted with water. The eluate is concentrated under reduced pressure and dried to yield 8.93 g of 4-methyl-5-[(2-aminoethyl)thiomethyl]imidazole as an oily product (yield: 86.2%).
