Procedure
2-(3,5-Dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinon-2-yl)-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzoic acid (100 mg) was dissolved in methanol (20 ml) and treated with diazomethane at room temperature. After 2 hours of reaction, the excess diazomethane was decomposed with acetic acid, the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, elution being carried out with chloroform. The above procedure gave methyl 2-(3-methoxy-5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinon-2-yl)-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzoate (60 mg).
