A solution of 6-oxo-6-(2-phenylethylamino)hexanoic acid (1.2 g) and N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole (0.77 g) in dry dichloromethane (50 ml) was stirred at 20° for 2 hours and a solution of 3,4-dimethoxy-2-[2-[3-methoxyphenyl] ethyl]benzeneethanamine (1.5 g) in dry dichloromethane (10 ml) was added. The mixture was stirred at 20° for 16 hours. Water (50 ml) was added and the organic phase was separated and washed with 2N hydrochloric acid, aqueous sodium bicarbonate and brine. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4), filtered and the solvent removed in vacuo. The resulting solid was crystallised from isopropanol to yield 2.1 g of the sub-title compound as colourless prisms, mp 150°-151°.
