10-Bromo-1,8-dihydroxy-9-anthrone (305 mg) was dissolved in dichloromethane (10 ml) and 3-mercaptopropionic acid (0.09 ml) was added. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 3 days, during which time a yellow precipitate was formed. This precipitate was filtered off and recrystallised from absolute ethanol to give 10-(carboxyethylthio)-1,8-dihydroxy-9-anthrone (240 mg, 72.7%) as pale yellow needles, melting point 152°-153° C. (Found: C 61.5, H 4.3, S 9.8%; M=330.0548; C17H14O5S requires C 61.8, H 4.3, S 9.7%; M=330.0562).
