Procedure

As in Example 110, 3,4-dihydro-6-methoxy-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde (9.7 g) and 2,3-dichloro-4,5-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (9.36 g) were stirred together in benzene (150 mL) at reflux for 17 hours. The usual workup provided 9.5 g of crude product which was crystallized from 2-propanol to give 7.4 g of 6-methoxy-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde, mp 99°-101° C. Anal. Calcd for C19H16O3 : C, 78.06; H, 5.52 Found: C, 78.05; H, 5.59
