Procedure
As in Example 112, (E)-3-(6-methoxy-3-pentylbenzo[b]thien-2-yl)-2-propenoic acid methyl ester (7.45 g) in methanol (40 mL) was treated with 2N sodium hydroxide solution (25 mL) at reflux for 15 minutes and the normal isolation procedure afforded 7.1 g of (E)-3-(6-methoxy-3-pentylbenzo[b]thien-2-yl)-2-propenoic acid. Crystallization of a sample from 2-propanol provided the analytical specimen, mp 209°-210° C. Anal. Calcd for C17H20O3S: C, 67.08; H, 6.62; S, 10.53 Found: C, 66.51; H, 6.49; S, 10.31
