Procedure
A solution of 4.6 g (0.12 mol) of sodium borohydride in 25 ml of water is added to 24 g (0.11 mmol) of (2-acetamido-indan-5-yl) methyl ketone (Example G) in 200 ml of methanol at room temperature. After 21/2 hours, the mixture is evaporated in vacuo and the residue is diluted with ice-water and acidified. The reaction product is extracted with 9:1 methylene chloride/methanol, the organic phase is dried, and the solvent is removed in vacuo.
