or by debenzylation of 4,5-dibenzyloxy-2,β-dinitrostyrene; in this case the debenzylation is performed by means of trifluoroacetic acid. In a second stage 5,6-dihydroxyindole is obtained from 4,5-dihydroxy-2,β-dinitrostyrene as indicated above (U.S. Pat. No. 4,595,765).
