Procedure
By the method of Example 7, Step A, 0.96 g (0.0026 mole) of 3-[4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-yl]acrylic acid and 1 mL of thionyl chloride were reacted in 20-30 mL of toluene, yielding 0.56 g of 3-[4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1H-pyrazol-5-yl]acrylic acid chloride as an oil. The nmr spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure and indicated the product to be primarily the trans acrylic acid derivative.
