Procedure
The compound of Example 5 (1.0 g, 0.0025 mo1e) was dissolved in methanol (35 ml) and hydrogen chloride gas was bubbled into the solution for 10 minutes. Nitrogen gas was bubbled into the reaction solution to remove most of the dissolved hydrogen chloride, and then the reaction mixture was poured into water (150 ml). The mixture was extracted twice with 100 ml of diethyl ether, and the combined extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to an oil with a rotary evaporator. The product was purified by silica gel chromatography. The structure was supported by NMR, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis.
