Reaction Steps
To a solution of [4-benzhydryloxycarbonyl-7-benzylidene-amino-3-cephem-3-yl]methyl-triphenylphosphonium iodide (16.9 g) in methylene chloride (200 ml) and water (100 ml) was added 36% aqueous formaldehyde (48 ml), followed by adjusting to pH 9.0 with sodium carbonate. After the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for an hour, the separated organic solution was washed with an aqueous sodium chloride and then dried over magnesium sulfate. Removal of the solvent gave benzhydryl 7-benzylidene-amino-3-vinyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate (8.6 g), mp 124°-132° C.
