Procedure
To a stirred hot solution of 0.45 g. (2.50 mM) of 3-methoxyphthalaldehydic acid and 0.34 g. (2.50 mM) rhodanine in 3ml. of acetic acid is added 0.68 g. (8.2 mM) of anhydrous sodium acetate. The resulting solution is refluxed 1.5 hours, cooled, and poured into 40 ml. of water to give a yellow gum which slowly solidifies to a yellow solid. The solid is collected, washed with water, and air-dried to give 5-(2-carboxy-6-methoxybenzylidene)rhodanine.
